Germanium Windows |
Germanium is well suited for IR applications because of its broad transmission range from 2µm to 23µm and opaque in the UV and visible portion of the spectrum. |
Germanium is thermal runaway, meaning that its transmission decreases as temperature increases. When temperature is 100°C, Germanium is nearly opaque. As such, Germanium window should be used at temperatures below 100°C. Germanium is high density, making it heavy. Its high density need to be considered when Ge is used for weight-sensitive systems. |
Germanium is widely used for optical windows in the applications of thermal imaging and FLIR. The surface reflectivity of Ge substrate is very high due to its high index of refraction, so anti-reflection coatings should be applied on germanium windows for sufficient transmission in the region of interest. |
