Sapphire window is an important material widely used in a range of applications such as Medical, Optics, Defense, Aerospace, Industry and R&D. All these applications require stringent surface quality of sapphire windows. Due to its high mechanical strength and chemical inactivity, the polishing of sapphire windows is extremely difficult and slow. Conventional polishing techniques of Chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) is unable to maintain both high quality surface and fast removal rate simultaneously. |
In order to improve the removal rate and develop a process for affordable production, HYT Sapphire Optics has investigated various means and methods for processing Sapphire Windows. |
After a series of experiments have been done, ultrasonic vibration is proved to be very useful to polish the sapphire windows. The experimental results and analysis show ultrasonic vibration assisted CMP system is an effective method to improve the removal rate of sapphire substrate. The removal rate is about twice as much as the traditional method with the help of ultrasonic energy. |
According to our CMP technique for polishing sapphire windows, the abrasice used is SiO2 sol, the particle size is 20-30nm and the concentration is 40%, and pH value is 10.0-11.0. |
Due to the developed technology, we have the capability of polishing sapphire windows with diameter up to 200 mm, surface accuracy up to 0.1 lambda and surface quality up to 20/10 MIL, simultaneously keeping the parallelism to 5 arc seconds. |
